On August 18, 2022, Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP) received the visit of professors from the National University of Asunción, as well as representatives of the Paraguayan Embassy in the State of São Paulo.
A meeting was held in the FMUSP Board of Directors' Room that addressed the importance of interaction between Latin American universities, the stimulation of student and faculty mobility, the exchange of experiences at all levels (undergraduate, graduate and extension), and potential agreements that contemplate future dual-degree programs.
Afterwards, representatives of the Paraguayan delegation were invited to visit the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of the Instituto do Coração, including the Cardio-Pneumology ICUs, under the coordination of Prof. Carlos Roberto R. de Carvalho, Full Professor of the Pulmonology Discipline at FMUSP. Prof. Carlos de Carvalho presented the integrated Respiratory ICU and Telemedicine systems he coordinates to the visiting delegation, and explained how these programs were essential during the Covid-19 pandemic.
On behalf of the Universidad Nacional de Asunción (UMA), from Paraguay, were present Prof. Zully Vera de Molinas, Rector, Prof. Javier Barua Chamorro, General Director of Technological Scientific Research, and Prof. Francisco Ramírez, Director of Public Relations II. Also participating from the Paraguayan Consulate in São Paulo were, Ambassador Luis Fernando Ávalos, Consul Vidal Benitez and Officer Carolina Ramírez Molinas participated.
“Integration initiatives that include the Latin American region are essential for increasing medical training at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Learning takes place bilaterally, with exchange of experiences and incorporation of new technologies and innovation”, declared Prof. Valeria Aoki, President of the International Relations Commission (CRInt) at FMUSP, who accompanied the delegation.
