The Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP), represented by Prof. Roger Chammas, Vice-Director at the time, and Prof. Nelson Gouveia, Vice-President of the International Relations Commission, was present at the international strategic forum for global health, the World Health Summit (WHS) 2022.

The event took place in October, in the city of Berlin, Germany, lasted three days, had more than 60 different thematic sessions and about 400 speakers. Organized, for the first time, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 4,100 people participated in person and approximately 60,000 over the internet. The target audience consisted of medical, scientific, political, private sector and civil society leaders.

Prof. Nelson Gouveia stated that the meeting had the presence of WHO Director, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, throughout the forum and the attendance of many relevant authorities in the field of world health. Some of the most discussed topics during the WHS were highlighted by Prof. Nelson, who said, "The sessions on climate change were powerful and highlighted their health impacts." The professor also stated that he has made efforts to include teaching about climate change in FMUSP graduation courses, with the aim of equipping future doctors.

In this edition of WHS, the central subjects were: investments in health and well-being, climate change and planetary health, preparedness for pandemics, digital transformation in health, food security, sustainable health systems and global health for peace.

“As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, two issues gained emphasis in the WHS. One was the acceleration of digital transformation, with online meetings and telemedicine. And, the other, how to prepare for new health emergencies, with surveillance and control actions”, pronounced Prof. Nelson, who also cited antibiotic resistance as yet another critical point in the present day.

For Hospital das Clínicas and FMUSP, Prof. Nelson highlighted that meetings like the World Health Summit help to identify themes to be considered in discussions about teaching, research and extension in our context.

WHS President Axel Radlach Pries said: “We have witnessed exceptional energy and commitment towards our goal of making global health a realistic policy choice. In order to act together and effectively guarantee a healthy life for everyone on a better planet”.
