The Division of Gastroenterology and Clinical Hepatology of the Central Institute of HC and the Department of Gastroenterology of the Medical School of USP received 40 researchers from 34 hospitals distributed through Argentina, Chile and several Brazilian states for training on the procedures of the ACLARA project, on October 1st and 2nd.
The ACLARA is a consortium of research on cirrhosis, founded by the European Foundation for the Study of Liver Failure (EF-CLIF), with its headquarters in Barcelona, Spain. It counts on the participation of 56 hospitals from 8 countries. The Brazilian coordinators of the project are: Prof. Flair Carrilho, Titular of the Department of Gastroenterology of FMUSP and director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Clinical Hepatology, Prof. Richard Moreau, from the Center of Research on Inflammation, of Paris and Prof. Alberto Farias, director of the project and associated professor of FMUSP. Representatives of EF-CLIF such as Anna Bosh, Cristina Sanchez, Joan Clarià and Marco Pavese were also present.
The goal of the multicenter study is to investigate the precipitating factors and the clinical aspects of a specific complication of cirrhosis, the acute to chronic liver failure (also known by the initials ACLF), a condition which has been demonstrated as being a serious worldwide public health issue by its elevated frequency and mortality. “The application of high-end technology of Biological Systems will allow us to advance on the understanding of how molecular mechanisms of this serious condition work and, in the future, improve the treatment of the patients”, explained Prof. Alberto Farias.
The cirrhosis is the 7th cause of death in adults in the world. It tackles men and women around 40 to 55 years old, mainly. At the Latin American population, the disease is more frequent and the mortality rate is bigger if compared to the European population.
