Prof. Flair Carrilho, Titular of the Department of Gastroenterology of FMUSP and director of the Gastroenterology Division and Clinical Hepatology, represented the ALEH – Latin American Association for the study of the Liver at the congress promoted by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases – AASLD, which happened in San Francisco, United States, from November 9th to November 13th.

The AASLD is one of the main scientific and professional health organizations committed to the prevention and cure of liver diseases, worldwide.

During the meeting, which gathered specialists from North America, Europe, Asia and Africa, Prof. Flair Carrilho presented a general panorama of the incidence and treatment of the hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) in Latin America. The Clínicas Hospital is the one with the best results in the early detection of this kind of cancer in hepatic cirrhosis patients, said the professor.

The Hepatology group of the Department of Gastroenterology has also participated in the event, with the presentation of 11 scientific works, coordinated by doctors Flair Carrilho, Alberto Farias, Claudia Oliveira, Denise Vezozzo, Suzane Kioko Ono, Daniel Mazzo and Mário Guimarães Pessoa.

Prof. Alberto Farias was presented with the Presidential Poster of Distinction Label by the work titled “Endogenous Heparinoid Effects during Bacterial Infections in Patients with Cirrhosis do Not Impair Thombin Generation: A Prospective Study”, made by the Doctorate student Marina Pomponet Motta, from the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, in collaboration with the Laboratory of Hemostasis of the Hematology Service, under the guidance of Dr. Alberto Farias.

The study relates new knowledge on the mechanisms of coagulation in patients with cirrhosis and infection and it has a high potential of contributing to modify the current recommendations for prevention of thrombosis in these patients.
