The Medical School of the Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP) expresses its condolences to the family, friends and peers who live alongside Prof. Israel Nussenzveig, who passed on January 16th, at 93 years old, in the city of São Paulo.
Prof. Israel Nussenzveig graduated in Medicine at FMUSP in 1948 and became a Lecturer-Professor of Nephrology in the Department of Clinical Medicine of FMUSP by late 1980’s. In addition of having a virtuous career in medical and welfare assistance, Prof. Israel has left his contribution to the academy and, also, to the field of Nephrology in the country as a whole.
Read below the memo written by Prof. Irene de Lourdes Noronha and Prof. Roberto Zatz:
“We inform, with profound sorrow, the passing of Prof. Dr. Israel Nussenzveig, one of the pioneers of Nephrology in our country and one of the founders of the Brazilian Society of Nephrology.
Prof. Dr. Israel Nussenzveig decided to dedicate himself to the study of renal diseases in 1952. During the following year he worked in France with Prof. Jean Hamburger and, upon his return, in 1954, joined the Unity of Renal Diseases, which had been recently founded by Professor Luís V. Delacourt and headed by Prof. José Barros Magaldi. His interest in Renal Physiology and electrolyte and fluid disturbances motivated him to publish, already in 1957, a specialized book, “Hydration in Surgery, Medical Clinic and Pediatrics”.
In 1960, Prof. Nussenzveig was one of the central personalities in a historical moment of Brazilian Nephrology: the founding of the Brazilian Society of Nephrology (SBN), of which he was the main idealizer. The Solemn Session occurred in the amphitheater of the 2nd Medical Clinic of HCFMUSP, on August 2nd of 1960, with the presence of Prof. Hamburger, then, in a visit to São Paulo. It was up to Prof. Nussenzveig to write down the Minute of the Founding of the SBN.
Prof. Nussenzveig always acted as a doctor at HCFMUSP. During his long career, he published many articles in national and international Journals and at the “Nephrology Actualities”, highlighting the study in which he anticipated in several years the use of the relation Protein/Creatinine at the urine, and the pioneer book on Nephrotic Syndrome, published in 1973. During a Paulista Meeting of Nephrology, Prof. Nussenzveig was fairly honored when a synopsis of his career was presented by Dr. Jenner Cruz.
We manifest our solidarity to the family and friends, to whom we join in this moment of sorrow.”
