The Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP) regretfully informs of the death of Prof. Marco Martins Amatuzzi, this Sunday (10/31/2021). The FMUSP Board provides solidarity and directs the deepest feelings to family members, friends and everyone who lived with Prof. Marco Amatuzzi.

Marco Martins Amatuzzi was born in São Paulo, on February 25, 1935. He graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo, in 1959. In 1960, he was a resident scholarship holder at the Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology (IOT) at Hospital das Clínicas de São Paulo and began his career in the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo, where he rose to all academic and functional levels, becoming Full Professor in 1983, head of the Clinical Staff between 1994 and 1995 and Full Professor in 1995. Currently retired, he was appointed Professor Emeritus at FMUSP.

In the 70s, he dedicated himself to knee surgery, becoming a pioneer in this area in Brazil. In 1979, Dr. Jack C. Hugston was in Brazil, one of the pillars of knee surgery in the United States, with whom he developed a close scientific relationship, becoming an honorary member of the Hughston Society, in 1987. He created the Knee Group from the IOT and from that embryo the Brazilian Society of Knee Surgery was born under his hands in 1983, of which he was the president of the foundation until 1988, forming the entire first generation of knee surgeons in Brazil and influencing the following ones, being a reference in the area to the present day.

He left numerous legacies throughout his fruitful career at the University, was President of the Constitution Committee of the Godoy Moreira Studies Center, created the Institute's Intensive Care Unit, left his mark in the scientific and educational area, creating the Movement Studies Laboratory, the Arthroscopy Laboratory and the Knee Group. He was President of the Undergraduate Committee and responsible for the Postgraduate course at the Department of Orthopedics. Created the role of medical writers as part of the infrastructure for scientific production. He was the advisor to numerous undergraduate and graduate students, produced several publications, participated in scientific events at national and international levels, and formed many of the current scientific leaders in orthopedics in Brazil. 

He had an important presence in society, being an outstanding orthopedist physician, having several expressive leaders in society, as well as high-level athletes from various sports, under his care. He was President of the Center for Studies and Research of the Sírio-Libanês Hospital in 1986, and Vice-President of the Brazilian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology between 1997 and 1998. Lately, he had remained connected to academic activity as a visiting professor at the Federal University of St. Charles.
